Can Your Phone Save You Money? mShopper Thinks So.

December 15, 2007

mShopper PostOne of the primary reasons that I bought my first smartphone was to be able to check and see if I was actually getting a good deal on something when I was out and about and away from my computer.  I hate buying something only to find out that I paid more than I should have.  Then you have to fight the return lines, find the receipt, and deal with the “I can’t believe I only get paid $6 an hour” employee behind the counter.  Lovely. December 12, 2007

Palm Centro LogoKudos to you Palm.  It appears that you might have a winner here with your new Centro.  Admittedly, this is the longest that I’ve been able to hold off on purchasing one of your new phones, but I went to play with one again tonight.  Nicely done.  Definitely what my Treo 755p should have been.

December 10, 2007

Blue Apple Logo
If you have a media-capable phone, searching for streaming video can be somewhat aggravating.  Youtube has their mobile site, but only allows you to search a limited amount of videos.  There have been smaller video sites that have popped up (and gone down almost as quickly) but because of bandwidth and legal issues, there aren’t many to choose from. MobilePlay.com Offers Fun For Phones, Personalized Mobile Site

December 3, 2007

Mobile Play Logo

Here is another example of a social networking site that is created for mobile phone users.  We’re not a huge fan of most of these types of sites because of the sheer amount of useless content, but MobilePlay has a redeeming quality in their robust portal.  You will still find plenty of semi-nude photos of people who couldn’t get their camera phone up and running fast enough, however, MobilePlay.com gives the user the ability to create a somewhat customized home page that is more useful than most (though Plusmo is still reigning champion in our book.) Itsmy.com - Why Some People Shouldn’t Own Camera Phones

December 2, 2007

OK, maybe we’re being a bit harsh here, but there are some things that certain people just shouldn’t do.  We realize that not everyone is supermodel material, but file this one under tube tops and thongs for 300+ lb ladies, camera phones and certain people just don’t mix…

The site that is itsmy.com (you’ve undoubtedly seen their ads) is mildly entertaining at best.  The idea is there - provide a place where users can easily share content created from their mobile phone, keep up with friends, etc., etc.  The whole thing has a “Made for early teens” feel about it, and what is just overwhelming is the sheer amount of people that feel the need to post pictures of themselves that even their significant others may not want to see (hmm…maybe there is a lack of “others” - have we stumbled on something here?)  Just check out the photo blog, you don’t need to go to far into it to see what we mean.

The good news is that the service is free.  You can set up your account with your phone pretty easily, just remember that you need to add a “+1″ to your phone number, otherwise you will never make it past step 3.

Once you are in, there is a myriad of options and things to do and see, a virtual cornocopia for those addicted to social networking (you know who you are).  The chat rooms seemed to be a good idea to check out, but apparently are set up for those only interested in your horniness status (sorry Texaz_boi, not really interested in one of your fireside chats.)  Perhaps we’ll try somewhere else…on second thought, maybe not.

Really, it’s doesn’t get much better, so I’m gonna go ahead and cut this one shorter than usual.  Bottom line, there’s a lot of losers out there, and while we’re sure that not every user of Itsmy.com is indeed a loser, they sure seem to attract most of them.  Basically, user beware, and if your kids are using this service, it may be time for a talk…you remember how people used to do that, right?
